Forces: a push or a pull

Two main kinds:

  1. non-contact forces - force is exerted across a distance without any contact

    • magnetism - force between two bodies made of certain metals.

    • gravity - force of attraction between two bodies that have mass

    • (static) electric forces - forces created by electric charges

  2. Contact forces - force of one body in contact with another.

    • applied - force of one body pushing or pulling on another

    • elastic - force of elastic (spring) materials being stretched or compressed (squished)

    • Normal - force of a surface pushing back against an applied force exerted on it.

    • Friction - a contact force that opposes motion

      • contact - force between bodies sliding across one another

      • wind resistance - force of air molecules hitting a moving body

      • water resistance - force of water molecules hitting a moving body
