Structure and Function

Complex and microscopic structures and systems can be visualized, modeled, and used to describe how their function depends on the shapes, composition, and relationships among its parts, therefore complex natural structures/systems can be analyzed to determine how they function.

An airplane wing is composed of many different components each of which must do a specific job.

Structures can be designed to serve particular functions by taking into account properties of different materials, and how materials can be shaped and used.

Structures are designed to use materials to accomplish specific tasks within certain criteria and constraints. Weight, strength, cost, and how a material is can be shaped are typical constraints that affect the choice of material and how it will be used.
