Cut the genes apart (into little squares)

Reproducing!

  1. Sit at a table with a partner. Each partner should:

    • place their two sex chromosomes and genes on the table (colored side up)

    • mix them up

    • make two sex cells with a random mix of 1 sex chromosome and 1 of each color gene

  2. Each partner chooses which sex cell from the other critter will be used

  3. fertilize (combine the chromosomes and genes)

  4. flip them over

  5. record the alleles inherited for each gene

  6. Name it!

electric current and magnetism

The magnetic field around a current-carrying wire forms closed circles.

The magnetic field around a current-carrying wire forms closed circles.

  1. the motion of charged particles creates a magnetic field

  2. electric current flows through a wire

  3. magnetic field is created around the wire carrying the current

  4. increasing the flow of electricity increases the strength of the magnetic field.

Permanent magnets can exert a force on a current carrying wire (demonstration).

Electromagnets

  1. made by wrapping a wire around a ferromagnetic core in a coil

  2. the core greatly increases the magnetic field of current flowing through the wire

  3. the more wrappings around the core, the greater the strength of the magnet

An insulated wire wrapped around a ferromagnetic core creates an electromagnet.

An insulated wire wrapped around a ferromagnetic core creates an electromagnet.

Properties of Electromagnets

  1. they are temporary magnets

  2. The strength f the magnet is directly proportional to

  3. the number of coils

  4. amount of electric current flowing

  5. Reversing the electric current reverses the magnetic polarity

As time permits - design a procedure to measure the effect of increasing the number of wrappings in an electromagnet on its strength.

Use a compass to measure strength

identify independent and dependent variables

identify variables to be controlled and explain how you will control them
