DI: Phenotype and Allele Symbols

  1. Phenotypes are the way a trait expresses in an organism

    • “Expresses” the organism shows this trait

    • Your phenotype for hair color is the actual color of your hair.

  2. Each phenotype has an allele that produces it

    • Alleles are just the different forms of a gene.

  3. Alleles are represented by a symbol

    • The correct symbol for any allele is the first letter of the dominant trait

      • A capital letter is used for the dominant allele

      • A lowercase letter is used for a recessive allele

    • Ex. Purple pea flowers are dominant and white pea flowers are recessive

      • The flower color allele is symbolized by the letter “P”

        • (P) for purple

        • (p) for white
