Lesson:

SLANT: finish notes from yesterday.

magnetic domains

  1. Atoms act like tiny magnets

    • When they are all oriented in different directions there magnetism cancels out.

    • These are nonmagnetic materials.

  2. Groups of atoms oriented in the same direction form magnetic domains.

    • Each is like a tiny magnet with a north and south poles.

Magnetic domain: an area in a magnetic material in which the magnetic fields of atoms all point in the same direction

when domains don't line up

  1. When magnetic domains all point in different directions, the material is not magnetic.

    • They cancel each other out.

When domains lineup

  1. When magnetic domains all point in the same direction, the material is a magnet

How magnets attract magnetic materials

Magnets cause the domains in magnetic materials to move until they point the same direction

This turns the material into a magnet

The two magnets can be attracted

Temporary Magnets

  1. Some magnets are temporary.

  • When a magnet is brought near them, the domains lineup making it a magnet.

  • When the magnet is taken away, the domains return to pointing in different directions.

Temporary magnets: a magnet that loses its magnetic field after being removed from magnetic field.

Permanent Magnet

  1. Strong magnetic fields can make a magnet permanent.

Permanent magnet: a magnet that remains a magnet after being removed from another magnetic field.
