Class Notes: Matter and Materials (Cont’d from 9/1)
Matter - anything that has mass and takes up space
made of atoms
all solids, liquids and gasses are made of matter
Material - Matter with homogenous properties that a something is or can be made of.
homogeneous - the same everywhere
properties - observable qualities or characteristics
Examples of observable properties
Examples of materials:
Density (a property of materials) - how tightly packed the matter in a material is.
How can we test/calculate/measure it?
formula
example
Volume - how much space an object takes up
Rectagular solids formula: V = L x W x H
Example
Lab Practice
Assign Lab Station
As team:
measure length, width, height and calculate volume of block.
Measure Mass - calculate density of block
return block and repeat with a new sample.
