CORRECT PHYSICAL PROPERTIES WORKSHEET IN GC

Chemistry Notes: Physical properties 10/4/2023

  1. physical property - a characteristic that you can observe or measure without changing the identity of the matter.

    • State - solid, liquid, gas

      • during changes of state, particle motion changes but the substance remains the same.

      • type of atoms not changed

      • molecules/chemical formulas not changed

    • Mass - amount of matter an object contains

    • volume - amount of space an object occupies

    • melting point - temperature at which a solid turns to a liquid

    • boiling point - temperature at which a liquid turns to a gas

    • density - ratio of mass per unit of volume of a substance

    • conductivity - how well a substance can conduct (conduct (carry along) electricty/heat

      • electrical conductivity

      • thermal conductivity

    • solubility - the ability of one substance (solute) to dissolve in another (solvent)

    • magnetism - a force of attraction between certain metals

  2. Some properties are size dependent.

    • The measurement varies with the amount of matter

    • mass, volume, dimensions of size

    • these are properties of objects, not substances
