Review PhET Lab: Exploring Friction

Notes on Friction with demonstrations:

  1. Friction is an opposing force caused by contact (rubbing) between surfaces.

  2. Friction always:

    • opposes a force “trying” to move an object

    • opposes the motion of an object.

    • acts in the opposite direction of another force or motion

  3. Friction is influenced by factors.

    • surface roughness

    • in general, rough surfaces create more friction, smooth ones less

      • sandpaper

      • ice

  4. Weight

    • more weight means a larger normal force between objects and a surface.

    • The greater this force, the greater friction is

  5. Motion

    • a nonmoving (static) object experiences more friction than a moving (sliding) object

    • It takes a bigger push to start a n object moving than needed to keep it moving.

      • sledding

      • pushing a dresser or table

  6. Material (ice versus concrete)

    • Make sure the net force = 0

  3. identify and draw the forces acting in the X axis direction

    • assume the student is in motion.

    • make sure the net force is < > 0

    • Use the forces packet to help label the forces with correct abbreviations.
