Grade 8 Lesson

Grade 8 students should check Google Classroom immediately. You have a survey to collect your preferred size for a graduation tee-shirt.

Today, you will continue learning how to analyze motion. This lesson focuses on understanding acceleration.

Step 1: Read pages 494 and 495 of the "Motion Forces and Newton's Laws" chapter attached to this lesson. Pay close attention to what acceleration means and how it is calculated.

Step 2: Read the "Math Skills" example on page 495. Try to solve the sample problem labeled "Practice" at the bottom of the box using the example to guide you.

Step 3: Watch the Acceleration video titled "Screen Recording..." on you tube. Pay close attention to the example calculations. I have also attached the PowerPoint slides if you want to look them over at your own pace.

Step 4: Try it! Solve the acceleration problems on the attached worksheet. Check your solution to the math practice while you do it!

Step 1: Review and check your work on the Describing Motion assignment you submitted to Google classroom on Monday. Use the PowerPoint and/or YouTube video below to check your work. Pay close attention to your understanding of velocity

Step 2: Complete the four question velocity comprehension check using the link to the Google form below.

Step 3: Complete the Speed Calculation Practice worksheet attached to this lesson. Follow the instructions carefully.

Today, you’re going to learn a bit more about whale evolution. Scientists believe they have made an extraordinarily strong case for an astounding claim; whales evolved from a four-legged predator about the size of a wolf. Your job is to assess the evidence.

You will read a short article about whale evolution followed by a 17 minute clip of a video on the topic.

Will be asked to reflect on what you've learned and assess whether or not you believe scientists have made a strong case for the astounding claim that whales evolved from small predators that lived on land.

Your lesson today is to use a textbook resource to review some of the important lines of evidence that show organisms have evolved over time on earth. You will need to read three pages from our textbook series in order to answer the questions related to this topic.

You will do all of your work in a single document that is been assigned to you in Google classroom. That assignment will also have attachments to the necessary readings.

  1. Your first step will be watch a segment of video on a disease called tuberculosis and how it has evolved to become drug-resistant.

  2. Your second step will be complete a worksheet with questions to reflect on what you learned in that video.

Your lesson for today is evaluate a case study of how natural selection and evolution are impacting the fight against HIV.

Students who have missing work will also receive instructions to make up the "Density Practice and Review" assignment.

  1. Your first step will be watch a segment of video on natural selection in HIV.

  2. Your second step will be complete a worksheet with questions to reflect on what you learned in that video.

  3. If you also receive a makeup assignment, your third step will be to complete that work as described.

Your lesson for today is to review natural selection and to use your knowledge to explain a strange story of a newt and a garter snake.

You will go to Google Classroom to complete this assignment. All of the documents you need are located there.

  1. Your first step will be complete the assignment titled “Natural Selection Review” located in Google Classroom. In it you will watch a short Amoeba Sister’s video on the topic and answer a few questions.

  2. Your second step will be to watch a short video explaining the relationship between two small animals in Washington state and explain the odd relationship between them. Again this assignment is in Google classroom.
