  4. mass is always conserved during physical changes

Conservation of Mass

  1. Mass is conserved during any physical or chemical change

    • this assumes the change occurs in a closed system

Slant: Displacement Methods for Finding Volume

  1. Displacement - measuring the change in water volume to find the volume of an object submerged in it

    • used for irregularly shaped objects

  2. select a graduated cylinder large enough to fit the object

    • a beaker is a second best option

  3. fill the graduated cylinder with enough water to cover the object

  4. carefully record the volume of water

    • Vi - Initial Volume (initial means beginning)

  5. Place the object in the G.C. and submerge it

    • Use the “electric Slide” not the “bombs away” method

    • splashing will hurt accuracy

  6. Record the final volume

    • Vf - final volume

  7. The volume of the object (Vo) is calculated with the following formula:

    • Vo = Vf - Vi

  8. Solve using FDSS format
