DNA structure and Function

  • Using Nucleotides to make Genes.

  • Genes are sections of DNA that control a trait.

    • Genes “code” for a protein that determines the trait.

      • hemoglobin (Carries oxygen in blood)

      • pheomelanin (ginger hair)

  • Proteines are built from amino acids that link together.

  • The gene tells a ribosome what amino acids to conect to make the protein.

  • CODONS - 3 letter (nucleotide) groups that specify an Amino Acid

  • Ribosome “read” the codons in DNA and connect amino acids to make proteins (traits).
