Lesson:

SLANT: Design of experiments

  1. Posing scientific questions

    • specific - not too general

    • objective - they likely have a definite answer, not opinion based

    • testable - an experiment or other form of research can create information that answers them

  2. forming a hypothesis

    • based on observations that identify SOMETHING we don’t know

    • proposes an explanation of what we think is happening

    • a model may be the best way to explain what we think is happening.

  3. Experiment: Designing a fair test

    • it is important to test one thing at a time

    • “fairness” means one key factor we thing explains our observations is tested

    • all other factors that may affect it are kept “fair” meaning the same.

    • These “factors” are called variables.

  4. making a prediction

    • What is the expected outcome of your test?

    • what will you measure that proves/disproves it?

    • use judgement and all available information

    • many times, predictions are partly or mostly incorrect

    • that’s ok!

  5. Variables:

    • Independent

      • the factor you are testing

    • Dependent

      • The outcome your will measure to test your prediction

    • Controlled

      • factors that could affect the outcome of the experiment

      • these are kept constant so they do not.
