SLANT: Design of experiments
Posing scientific questions
specific - not too general
objective - they likely have a definite answer, not opinion based
testable - an experiment or other form of research can create information that answers them
forming a hypothesis
based on observations that identify SOMETHING we don’t know
proposes an explanation of what we think is happening
a model may be the best way to explain what we think is happening.
Experiment: Designing a fair test
it is important to test one thing at a time
“fairness” means one key factor we thing explains our observations is tested
all other factors that may affect it are kept “fair” meaning the same.
These “factors” are called variables.
making a prediction
What is the expected outcome of your test?
what will you measure that proves/disproves it?
use judgement and all available information
many times, predictions are partly or mostly incorrect
that’s ok!
Variables:
Independent
the factor you are testing
Dependent
The outcome your will measure to test your prediction
Controlled
factors that could affect the outcome of the experiment
these are kept constant so they do not.
