Homework:

complete an initial experiment plan in the google classroom document no later that sunday evening.

Lesson:

Investigating Bouncy Balls

Discuss and form a plan for an experiment

  1. Form a scientific question about bouncy balls.

  2. propose a hypothesis.

  3. explain a fair test that will investigate your hypothesis.

  4. Make a prediction using your hypothesis to predict and answer about your question.

    • if-then statement

Notes on Scientific Experiments

  1. POSING SCIENTIFIC QUESTIONS

    • SPECIFIC - NOT TOO GENERAL

    • OBJECTIVE - THEY LIKELY HAVE A DEFINITE ANSWER, NOT OPINION BASED

    • TESTABLE - AN EXPERIMENT OR OTHER FORM OF RESEARCH CAN CREATE INFORMATION THAT ANSWERS THEM

  2. FORMING A HYPOTHESIS

    • BASED ON OBSERVATIONS THAT IDENTIFY SOMETHING WE DON’T KNOW

    • PROPOSES AN EXPLANATION OF WHAT WE THINK IS HAPPENING

    • A MODEL MAY BE THE BEST WAY TO EXPLAIN WHAT WE THINK IS HAPPENING.

  3. EXPERIMENT: DESIGNING A FAIR TEST

    • IT IS IMPORTANT TO TEST ONE THING AT A TIME

    • “FAIRNESS” MEANS ONE KEY FACTOR WE THING EXPLAINS OUR OBSERVATIONS IS TESTED

    • ALL OTHER FACTORS THAT MAY AFFECT IT ARE KEPT “FAIR” MEANING THE SAME.

    • THESE “FACTORS” ARE CALLED VARIABLES.

  4. MAKING A PREDICTION

    • WHAT IS THE EXPECTED OUTCOME OF YOUR TEST?

    • WHAT WILL YOU MEASURE THAT PROVES/DISPROVES IT?

    • USE JUDGEMENT AND ALL AVAILABLE INFORMATION

    • MANY TIMES, PREDICTIONS ARE PARTLY OR MOSTLY INCORRECT

    • THAT’S OK!

  5. VARIABLES:

    • INDEPENDENT

      • THE FACTOR YOU ARE TESTING

    • DEPENDENT

      • THE OUTCOME YOUR WILL MEASURE TO TEST YOUR PREDICTION

    • CONTROLLED

      • FACTORS THAT COULD AFFECT THE OUTCOME OF THE EXPERIMENT

      • THESE ARE KEPT CONSTANT SO THEY DO NOT.
