Homework to be completed:

Quiz on Electric Forces Friday, January 6th

  1. Rocketman wrap-up due friday, January 6th

  2. magnetism

Today’s agenda:

can races

Bracket

Race Rules

All cans must start on the starting line.

You “Static tool” must be placed on the table.

When I signal to “start” you may pick up your tool and begin racing.

You may not push your can forward by:

  • contact

  • blowing

If your can falls off the edge, you must:

  • Pick it up.

  • Place it on the table at a point behind where it fell off.

  • Continue the race..

Observers must stand back and not interfere with the racers.

Wednesday, January 4, 2023. Day 5

Do Now:

Homework to be completed:

Quiz on Electric Forces Friday, January 6th

  1. Rocketman wrap-up due friday, January 6th

  2. magnetism

Today’s agenda:

Triboelectric series and Induced Charge

Demonstrate phenomenon

Explain - diagram on board - students take notes

  1. Triboelectric series - list order of materials that tend to give up charge or gain charge through contact.

    • Donors - give electrons up and become positively charged

    • Gainers - take electrons through adhesion and become negatively charged

  2. Induced Charge - When the electrons move out of an area and leave an unbalanced positive charge

    • Happens in conductors

      • conductors - materials that allow electrons to move through them freely

        • metals

    • Does not happen in insulators

      • insulator - materials that resist the movement of electrons

    • Metal objects acquire positive and negative poles

  3. Rub balloon on hair

    • Balloon takes electrons through adhesion

    • becomes negatively charge.

  4. Placed near a metal can - electrons (negative charges)are pushed to opposite side.

    • can now has a positive and negative poles

  5. opposites attract

    • can is pulled toward the balloon

Experiments in triboelectric Charge and Induced Charge

Can race bracket tomorrow - pick you clothing wisely!

Tuesday, January 3, 2023. Day 4

Work on finishing your “Rocketman Wrap-up”

  • you will not be given class time to finish this after today.

  • Use the opportunity wisely!

Friday, December 16, 2022. Day 5

Fuel Rockets…

As time permits…

Class Notes: Conductors, Insulators, and Transferring Electrons

  1. Conductor

    • any material electrons can move through easily

    • all metals

    • used commonly in wiring foe all electrical technology

  2. Insulator

    • any material that electrons cannot move through easily

    • glass, rubber, air

    • used for protection in safety and electrical equipment

  3. Transferring charge

    • Contact - rubbing an insulator on another and removing electrons through adhesion

    • Conduction - electrons moving though metals such a s wires

      • always flows for object with a high charge toward lower charge

      • flow until charge is equalized

    • Induction - polarization of a conductor when a charge object is placed near it

      • Charges in the conductor flow away from a negatively charge object and group up at far end

      • gives the conductor opposing negative and positive poles.

Electrostatic Force Experiments

Thursday, December 15, 2022. Day 4

Do Now:

Homework to be completed:

finish ELECTRIC CHARGE AND FORCES LESSON 1 OUTLINE.

  • for tomorrow.

Make sure any and all work assigned during mys absence Monday-Wednesday is compelted and turned in.

Todays agenda:

Late Work Notices sent

Finish all work on Balloons and Static Charge vs Speed Graphing

Rocket Launch Update

  • Monday

  • Preflight checks - passed in/entered.

  • Launch order - random

Transcribe the following Class Notes into your notebook.

  1. Atomic Structure

    • nucleus

      • protons (positive charge)

      • Neutrons (neutral charge)

    • Electron Cloud

      • Electrons, orbit nucleus, negative charge

  2. electrons are “easily” lost/gained by atoms

    • Atoms are normally “neutral” meaning they have equal numbers of positive and negative particles that balance.

    • When an atom loses electrons, it becomes positively charged.

    • atoms that gain electrons become negative

  3. Charged objects

    • objects are also normally neutral.

    • when the atoms that make them up gain or lose electrons they becoem charged

    • extra electrons - negative

    • fewer electrons - positive

    • Static charge - unbalanced negative or positive charge on an object.

  4. Electric Forces

  5. Charged objects are surrounded by an electric field

    • Electric Field - regions influenced by electric forces

    • other charged objects are attracted or repeled in this field

    • opposite charges (+,-) attract

    • Similar charged (-,- or +,+) repel.

  6. Charge and Distance affect field strength

    • The more charge an object has the stronger the field

    • Stronger forces occurs close and weaker ones further away

finish ELECTRIC CHARGE AND FORCES LESSON 1 OUTLINE.
