Newton’s Third Law in Google Classroom -

  • Due Wednesday.

Today’s Agenda:

Discuss and review Newtons third law.

Read:“Newtons Third Law” page 513-514 in MH Ch14 Motion Forces, and Energy.
Take Notes
in your notebook.
Title them “Newton's Third Law”
and include the date.
Be sure to include information on:

  • Newton's Third Law.

    • When an object exerts a force on a second object, the second object exerta an equal but opposite force on the first.

      • ‘For every action, there is an equal but opposite reaction’

  • Action/reaction forces

    • Action and reaction forces always occur together.

    • The action is generally thought of as the force that “started it”

    • which force is action and which is reaction really does not matter

  • "force pairs"

    • Because forces always come in pairs, the action and reaction are called a force pair.

      • Force pairs are not balanced - they act on different objects!

    • If you “head” a soccer ball…

      • The push (action) of your head affect the soccer ball

      • it is unbalanced and the ball accelerates.

    • The push of the soccer ball on your head (reaction) is also unbalanced.

      • Your head accelerates in the opposite direction

      • Concussion anyone???

  • The action and reaction may affect the first and second object differently.

    • If you and an elephant are wearing roller skates AND you push off on the elephant…

    • you will move more than the elephant

    • The acceleration of your body is a=f/m

    • Your mass (m) is so much smaller than the elephant, you accelerate more!

  • Create a table similar to Table 1 on page 514.

  • In it describe two different examples based on activities you engage in.
