Design Selection Table

Portfolio Preparation

Manila folder - neatly Labeled

  • Period

  • names of team members.

Contents: these items must be neatly arranged in this order

  1. Rough sketches (any format, neatly stapled together as a group)

  2. Final Sketches (on graph paper, drawn with ruler, well labeled with details and pros/cons)

  3. Design Selection Grid (fulled out filly and final choice identified.

  4. Calculations of Materials Requirements (insulation)

    • Use FDSS format to calculate the circumference and area of any insulation materials required

  5. Cost Estimate (use the table provided to calculate the cost of the materials you expect to use.)

  6. Calculation of Volume/Measurement Check

Each team must brainstorm at least two possible solutions to the problem or one solution per team member (whichever is greater).

All designs must be based on the materials we have available.

Each solution must be modeled with a neat drawing showing its construction and all of its parts labeled. Also include a written description of its advantages and possible weaknesses.

  1. Title at the Top

  2. Use graph paper and a ruler - make it neat.

  3. Show a side view.

  4. Drawing must be to scale.

    • 1:1 or 1:2

  5. Key parts/components must be identified and labeled.

  6. Show hidden (internal) features with dotted/dashed lines.

  7. Make a table of Pros and Cons under the drawing or on the back.

Example rating Table for Selecting a design to Prototype.

Overdue:

Complete your Research on Hot Drink Solutions

  • Turn it in

Identify at least 2-5 different kinds of products designed to keep drinks warm/cold.

  • All teams must do 2 plus the number of team members.

    • 1 person -2

    • 2 persons - 3

    • 3 persons - 5

  1. Include a name, picture, and write a paragraph describing the product.

  2. Make a table of Advantages and Disadvantages related to the product.

  3. Identify and describe what you can learn from the product that may impact your design.

Direct Instruction:

Class to take Notes on Problem Definition, Research, and Identifying Criteria and Constraints

Define the Problem

  • What is the problem or need?

  • Who has the problem or need?

  • Why is it important to solve?

  • The format for writing a problem statement uses your answers to the questions and follows these guidelines:

    • Who need(s) what because why.

    • _____ need(s) _________ because ________.

Background Research

  • many problems have existing solutions.

  • many solutions are inadequate - need improvement

  • learn from the experience of others.

  • Focus on:

    • potential users/customers

    • existing/previous solutions

Specify Requirements For a Solution

  • Criteria - required or desired characteristics in a solution

    • Think about users and the problem description

    • list criteria

  • Constraints - restrictions or obstacles to a solution

    • Review the problem descritption

    • identify and list constraints
