Truss design Tips - read and Take Notes

Today’s Lesson:

Building a Simple Box Truss

Today, we will finish construction of our box truss.

Measure and mark pasta into 10 - 6 cm segments.

Break the pasta on your marks to cut into 6 cm segments. These members will be used for struts on your truss.

Obtain a small (3/4”) ball of clay and separate it into 8 pieces. Position these on your template as shown.

Press one of your side trusses into the clay to put it into a standing position as shown.

Repeat this with the other side truss so they are in a standing position, parallel to each other.

Glue the top struts in place and allow to dry. Work on your homework while waiting.

Mark and cut your chords (long pieces) to length.

Mark your attachment points.

It can be helpful to sketch out a full scale drawing of the truss you are building.

Position your top and bottom chord (long pieces).

Apply glue at all joints (connection spots).

Get everything straight and ready to attach the vertical braces.

Attach the vertical braces. Use a toothpick or a pencil tip to nudge them into “perfect” positions.
