Today’s Lesson:

Disaster Data Entry

Enter the data for 3-5 disasters using the database provided.

You will be given a portion of a list of natural disasters in the US.

Read each disaster and enter data into the database linked here.

When finished - Move on to the plate boundaries activity.

Draw plate boundaries on your map

  1. Examine the earthquakes you have mapped

  2. with a colored pencil, draw where you think plate boundaries may located.

  3. Click this link to see where they are actually located.

  4. Use a different color pencil to mark actual boundaries.

  5. Discussion:

    • How accurate were you?

    • If you had more data (day) do you think you could identify additional boundaries?

  6. Write reflection on the back and turn in.

  1. Geologist Jeffrey Mount says, “The phrase ‘natural disaster’ misses the point.” What does he mean? 

  2. Why have fewer people died in natural disasters in recent years than previously in history? 

  3. What is a levee? How have levees changed New Orleans? 

  4. What makes levees potentially dangerous? 

  5. In what ways are researchers trying to prevent natural disasters like the one caused by Hurricane Katrina?

After Reading/Discussion

  1. Should people be forced to leave their homes if their community is threatened by a strong hurricane? Why or why not? 

  2. Why are floods both good and bad for coastal areas such as New Orleans? 

  3. Do you think the flooding caused by Hurricane Katrina will keep most people from moving back to New Orleans? Why or why not? 

  4. Describe two changes that people in New Orleans should consider if and when the city is rebuilt. Explain how these changes might help avoid future disasters.

  • Copy the quake locations onto your map.

    • Make a small circle for each quake.

    • These should be about the size of a hole punch dot or even a bit smaller.

  • Color large quakes in red (bigger than magnitude 6).

  • Color all smaller quakes yellow.

    • You may choose different colors - make a key on your map.
